Children in Need 2011

Thank you for all your help. This year we have raised £412 for Children in Need, our biggest total yet. We all had a lovely day, there were lots of spots around school! Well done to everyone.

School Disco

We had our first school disco of the year this week. Everyone had a lovely evening dancing to the music, eating sweets and enjoying hotdogs. Both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 filled the dance floor showing off their moves. We are all looking forward to the next one.

Harvest Festival

We celebrate Harvest Festival every year, we always have an assembly and collect food to be given to people who are less well off than ourselves. This year we collected food but we were set a challenge of who could create the longest snake made with the food they had collected in their class. Our winners were Miss Swepsons class who's snake measured 10 and a half meters. It was a very close competition. Well done to Miss Swepsons class.

Year 5 and 6 Cinema Trip

This week is National Schools Film Week and years 5 and 6 were able to go the Cinema today to see the film, The Zoo Keeper. It was a very funny film and we all had a fantasic time. For some of us it was our first ever trip to the Cinema. We all enjoyed our trip out and hope to be lucky enough to be able to go again next year.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday the 30th of September the whole of Highlees school held a huge coffee morning in support of the Macmillan Nurses. Every class made cakes to be sold in their classroom. The Teachers and the Kitchen Staff made cakes to be sold in the large hall. In total we raised £317 from the Macmillan Coffee Morning. Well done and thank you to everyone who helped us to do so well.

Peterborugh Film Awards

On Tuesday 12th July children from years 3 and 4 attended the Peterborough Children's Film Awards at Kingsgate. We all got dressed up in our best suits and dresses. We were very, very excited! Some of us were lucky enough to be interviewed on the red carpet! As we went to our seats (in the front row!) we could see lots of other children from different schools in Peterborough. The atmosphere was fantastic! Before the ceremony started we watched a video message from Dick and Dom from In Da Bungalow. They made everyone shout bogies really, really loudly. Even the adults had to do it! All of us had a absolutly fantastic night. We were lucky enough to win three trophies! Well done Highlees!

Happy Chicks

Reception have been watching and waiting very patiently for the chicks to hatch. It's quite an exciting time for all of us, as the whole school wants to see them hatch. Each class went to visit the chicks and see how they were growing and changing. We all took turns to hold the fluffy chicks.

Playground Party

To celebrate the Royal Wedding our whole school had a Playground Party. Each class brought in some treats to share, and we all sat on the grass and had a giant picnic together. It was a lovely afternoon and a lovely way to start the Summer Term. Every class worked very hard finding out lots of information about Prince William, Kate Middleton and the Royal Family.

Art Week

This week was Art Week, we invited our parents in to school to do some art work with us. We had Parents in every class, and all had alot of fun working together. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Thank you for joining us.

Sacrewell Farm

Reception went to Sacrewell Farm to see the baby lambs that had recently been born. They were able to feed some of the lambs. They had a great time seeing all the animals on the farm. They had even more fun rolling down the hill and playing on the tractor.

Zoolab

Key Stage 1 had some visitors during March, some furry friends and some not so furry came into the classrooms. The children all held a rabbit, a Snake, an African Snail, a Rat, a Giant Millipeed and a Hissing Cockroach. We all had to wash our hands before lunch!

Mad Science

Science day was held on the 17th of March. We were very lucky ot have a vist from a Mad Scientist. She had some fantastic experiments to show us. We learnt all about sound waves, how sound travels, how electricity travels and what makes a good conductor. We all really enjoyed her visit and took some of her ideas back to our classrooms.

Recycle!

Today we had a visit from the Peterborough Recycling Team. They showed us what we can and can not put in our recycling bins. It was a very interesting assembly.

Book Week

This week Has been Book Week, we have all enjoyed stories and reading our class book together. We have had some visitors in to school who have told us about their favourite stories and Authors. We have had a bedtime story told while we wore our pyjamas, cuddled our teddies and drank hot chocolate. It has been a very busy week each class presented a piece from their classes chosen book in assembly on friday to show what they have been doing in class this week.

So You Think You Can Dance December 2010

On the last day of term we held our So You Think You Can Dance Final. All the classes had been holding auditions throughout the week, they entered their favourite act into the final. The Children all enjoyed showing off their dancing abilities and we enjoyed watching them. This year it was the year 5 girls who won. Well done Girls.

Carol Concert 2010

On the 17th December we held our Christmas Carol Concert. It was a very enjoyable end, to a very busy term. Everyone who came to the concert said how lovely it was. A big thank you to Reception and the Choir, you were all wonderful. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the staff at Highlees.

Christmas Dinner 2010

We all enjoyed our Christmas Dinner, sitting down to eat with our friends, pulling crackers and wearing our Christmas hats. The meal was lovely. The whole school would like to say a big thank you to our kitchen staff for all their hard work.

Reception Nativity

Fund Raising

We have been fund raising for a new Stage area in the large hall, each Friday a year group will sell a selection of items on the playgroud at break time. So far this term we have sold iced biscuits, ice poles and we have even had a lucky dip stall. The total for our fund raising has now reached £834.35p. Well done children.

Children In Need 2010

Did you wear your spots? The children at Highlees School did! This year we managed to raise £291.00 for Children In Need and the total is still growing! Year 6 did a fantastic job organising games and stalls in the hall for us all to enjoy. Year 4 made iced biscuits to sell on the Key Stage 2 playground, Year 2 made chocolate rice crispy cakes to sell on the Key Stage 1 playground. Well done to everyone and a big thank you for all your help.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day

Years 5 and 6 had been learning about wartime in�class and had�made some lovely poppy wreaths to display in our school.�The whole school took part in�the two minutes silence on the 11th of November in assembly, while our year 6 class hung up the wreaths.

Sing Up at the Cathedral

Some of our children from years 3,4 and 5 went to Peterborough Cathedral to join other schools to perform a number of songs all together. The children really enjoyed giving their performance.

Year 4 Class Assembly

Year 4 treated us to a wonderful assembly this morning. They told us all about the Egyptians, Mummification, the Pyramids and sang us a fantastic rap too. Thank you Year 4 we all really enjoyed your show. Take a look at their photos.

Jeans for Genes Day 2010

We all wore our Jeans to school today to support Jeans for Genes Day, this year Highlees raised £227.91p. Well done to everyone.

The Music Man

As it is Geography Week we wanted to see different types on Instruments and find out where they came from. So we had someone come in to school to show us some Instruments and tell us all about them. All our classes had a session booked and really enjoyed trying out the Instruments and finding out all about them. We had a whole school assembly where the children showed the adults how to play these Instruments. Visit our Gallery to see how they got on.

Airport Day September 2010

Year 6 Leavers Assembly

Our Year 6 Leavers Assembly took place on the 22nd July 2010. It was an excellent play with a Doctor Who theme. The play took us all back in time to remember past teachers and some very special memories from the pupils. Highlees wishes all our Year 6 Pupils Good Luck at their new secondary Schools.

Highlees Got Talent 2010

Highlees Got Talent 2010 was once again a really big success, the children really enjoy showing off their talents to the rest of the school and we all enjoy watching them. This year we had a Family contest we had five family entertainers who were all very good, it was a difficult decision to pick the winner.

Merit Assembly 2010

We celebrated our Merit Asssembly on the 16th of July 2010. Every teacher gave out three awards to their class. It was wonderful to see so many children doing so well in their learning. Mrs Platts gave out the Head Teachers Award to a pupil in year 6 who had no idea the award was for him. We would like to a say a very big well done to all the children who recieved certificates.

Science Assemblies

Hunstanton Trip Year 1

Year 1 went to Hunstanton to experience what it would feel like under the sea. We visited the Sea Life Centre in Hunstanton and sat in the tunnel underneath the Sharks. It was a great day, we had a picnic lunch on the grass and an afternoon on the beach collecting interesting shells and making sandcastles.

Lion King Trip

The Drama Club went to see The Lion King at the The Lyceum Theatre in London, they all had a wonderful day as well as seeing the show they got to see some of the sights around London. They also saw some of the new buildings where the 2012 Olympics will be held.

PGL 2010

Our trip to PGL this year was as sucessful as all the others we have had. Years 5 and 6 had a fantastic time, they were able to experience some quite scary activities including the Climbing Wall, Jacobs Ladder and the Giant Swing.

Roman Museum Trip Year 4

Year 4 are learning about The Romans this term so they went to Peterborough Museum, where they had a really good time and learned lots of interesting information about The Romans. As you can see from the pictures in our Gallery the children really did enjoy themselves!

Friday Fun Day

Once a half term we have a Friday Fun Day, where the children can choose an activity to do on the Friday afternoon. There were loads of different activities to choose from, some children did Tie Dye or made Chinese Dragons or did some Cooking. Others played Football or Outside Games. All the children who took part had a wonderful afternoon.

Year 6 Prom 2010

Sing up at the Cathedral

Highlees Primary School was asked to take part in the Sing Up at the Cathedral Concert this month. 40 pupils from Highlees went to the concert. They joined other schools form Peterborough and they all sang together. It was a very enjoyable evening. Well done to all the children who took part.

Music Week

Music Week was lots of fun, this is the first time we dedicated a whole week to music. We had a singer come in to give us lessons, a Digital Recording Artist to record our classes work and an African Drumming Artist who taught us how to play the African Drums. We all had a fabulous week.

World Book Day

Hatching Chicks in Reception

Airport Day

On Tuesday the 2nd of February everybody went on holiday! Each class in school had to remember to take their passport and pick up their tickets to go to another country. Every teacher oganised an activity and spoke about the traditions and customs related to their favourite country. We all had a really interesting day.

Haiti Earthquake Appeal

The Children decided that they would like to raise some money to send to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. So today on the 29th of January we have had a 'Dress Down Day'. Which means no School Uniform, and we have raised £268.40. Well done everyone. Thank You.

H Factor

On our last day of term before Christmas, we held our H Factor Final. It was a really great way to end the year. All the children who took part were a pleasure to listen to, everyone really enjoyed their performances. We even had a special guest, Nicloe Lawrence who had appeared on the X Factor. Our winner really deserved to win he sang brilliantly. Well done to everyone who took part.

I would like to say well done to all of the children in KS2, the Christmas production was wonderful. I would also like to thank the staff and the children for all their hard work putting the performances together. It was a difficult task doing a scene per class but I think it worked really well.
